For The Long Run.
Here lie the Millennium Development Goals. The MDGs, for short, are eight international targets that the each country must fulfill by 2015. Issues range from preserving the environment to fighting off illnesses that plague across oceans, across hemispheres. It is a promise every government must carry out in order to become a finer world.
The information below expresses how it has been going for Laos, in particular as well as an opinion on where it is headed.
The information below expresses how it has been going for Laos, in particular as well as an opinion on where it is headed.
Goal #1: Eradicating Extreme Poverty and Hunger. OVERVIEW: Although Southeastern Asia has made the jump from fourteen to ten percent in the amount of people who live under the poverty line, Laos should not necessarily be considered praiseworthy in any sense of the word. In 2004, it was the least developed country with its people taking in roughly a little more than a dollar a day. CURRENT CONDITION: In all aspects of the target goals, Laos is falling behind. The amount of people in poverty and also dealing with hunger has not been halved in the slightest and the bit about productivity. PROBABILITY OF SUCCESS: 11% |
Goal #2: Achieving Universal Primary Education. OVERVIEW: Things are better in this category. There have been many, many children who have been taken to school in recent year, which is probably a product of the Millennium Goals. The issues are two, keeping kids in a learning environment after they have joined it and also, maintaining the presence of a solid female student body. CURRENT CONDITION: There has not been much available info on the specifics, but if I were to reiterate, I would highlight the adolescent and girls as the target audience to keep in schools. PROBABILITY OF SUCCESS: 62% |
Goal #3: Promoting Gender Equality and Empowering Women. OVERVIEW: So women have become active members of society. Many have taken up jobs and some have even been able to become a part of parliament. Yes, it has become a bit of uneasy wave to cover for some this is in direct polarity of the traditional. CURRENT CONDITION: The country is pretty much on-par with the whole equality thing. The one thing that might need a little of work is making sure everyone is educated, but that is about it. PROBABILITY OF SUCCESS: 84% |
Goal #4: Reducing Child Mortality Rates. OVERVIEW: The likelihood of these newborns surviving when they are brought into the world is quite high and of course, the flip side to this is staying alive past the age of five, or one, for that matter. From the naked eye, the numbers in favor of keeping them alive have risen, but Laos remains the among the worst in the Southeastern Asia. CURRENT CONDITION: Right now, they are trying to keep up with the crawlers and toddlers who are in much need of vaccination against all the prevalent illnesses that are common in the more rural, and poverty-stricken areas. PROBABILITY OF SUCCESS: 72% |
Goal #5: Improving Maternal Health. OVERVIEW: Right now, women are greatly in need of services to soothe them through pregnancy, labor and the beyond. The amount of deaths and complications have been going down, thankfully. Intervening in the rural areas and in the younger women are the best bet the country has at achieving these goals. CURRENT CONDITION: It is all about investing. They are attempting to put in all the right places, but without much to go around, it does make it any easier for all those involved. PROBABILITY OF SUCCESS: 67% |
Goal #6: Combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and other Diseases. OVERVIEW: Oddly enough, it is HIV/AIDS that deserves most of the concerns in this Southeastern country. When it comes to this virus, the job this goal must instill is keeping the public knowledgeable about how to avoid the worst. Malaria and tuberculosis have slowly been chipping away at a practically miniscule amount of the population. CURRENT CONDITION: The latest treatments will be needed for all three of the above, for new strains of reach are making it harder for the public to survive. But, rest assured, the first step that must be made is pinpointing all those affected and working from there. PROBABILITY OF SUCCESS: 62.4% |
Goal #7: Ensuring Environmental Sustainability.
OVERVIEW: The whiplash of losing a little less than half of Laos’ forests by way back in 2002 still has not made itself a less sensitive topic. Soil erosion, uncultivated land, illegal hunting, just as felonious trading, increased use of fuelwood, slash-and-burn farming and good old global climate change must been added to the pot of what is keeping this country from running smoothly, almost becoming like a game of you got it, we have it. And, that is what holding them back. CURRENT CONDITION: Laos is trying to harness the power of the water (hydropower), seeing as there is an abundance of it there. Attention is a good thing, as long as the nearby residents are not affected by these changes. PROBABILITY OF SUCCESS: 45% |
Goal #8: Developing a Global Partnership for Development. OVERVIEW: For this, the plan of action is mostly attempting to spruce up the country’s own connections and market. This is all nice and dandy, but the only power they are talking to is the UNDP. No actual relations with an unaffiliated organization have been made, but the assumption they must have come to must have been something along the lines of solidifying their standings before diving head first into the rest of the world. CURRENT CONDITION: Mostly, Laos just has to keep committing to the best Laos it can be. As long as they tinker themselves to become more effective and efficient in their ways, then they should be fine. PROBABILITY OF SUCCESS: 90.1% |
Goal #9: Reduce the Impact of UXO. OVERVIEW: This last one is unique to the country and very much deserved. During the Vietnam War, a cornucopia of bombs were dropped on Laos and more than one-fifth of them were estimated to have not been detonated. The number is well into the millions. These unexploded ordnance are littered across the land. Notice the glaring red color and the imagine used, the uneasy message to be conveyed. Such is terrifying and entirely necessary. CURRENT CONDITION: Adhere to the previous methods of raking the land using safe ways of detection and the country should be fine. PROBABILITY OF SUCCESS: 33% |
